Last week, Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine was approved by the FDA. As vaccines begin arriving in your state, you may be eager to schedule an appointment to get one. Not so fast.
According to the CDC, the supply of the vaccine is expected to be limited at first. As a result, current supplies will go to healthcare personnel and long-term care facility residents. They provided this direction with the following goals in mind:
Decrease death and serious disease as much as possible
Preserve functioning of society
Reduce the extra burden COVID-19 is having on people already facing disparities
As the supply increases, the CDC and Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices (ACIP) will update their recommendations. They hope everyone will be able to easily get a vaccine as soon as large quantities are available.
In the meantime, continue to follow all protocols to keep yourself safe from COVID-19. Wear your mask, stay six feet away from those you don’t live with and wash your hands often. Stay safe!
